Adaptive strategy biases in engineered ecosystems: Implications for plant community dynamics and the provisioning of ecosystem services to people

Plant communities in green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) such as biofilters play an integral role ecosystem services provisioning, that many design manuals now feature plant lists guide vegetation selection. This study looks at the implications of those for biofilter and their services, focusing on (1) how plants are selected across US climate zones, (2) whether exhibit adaptive strategy biases (i.e. towards competitive, stress tolerant or ruderal strategies might impact provisioning) (3) human-induced selection natural climatic processes underly any revealed. Our results suggest significantly biased tolerance competitiveness (depending zone) away from ruderalness relative to broader pool native wetland-adapted species. Competitive bias was evident humid-continental climates stress-tolerant hot coastal/arid climates, with some degree anti-ruderal present all zones. These correlated human concerns related water availability (water conservation; p < 0.05, irrigation; 0.1, extremes; 0.1).
